EP Power Grit GmbH
EP Power Grit GmbH of Oberhausen, Germany, is the abrasives arm of EP Power Minerals GmbH and produces mineral expendable blasting abrasives. We are an authorised dealer and stock the Asilikos brand in three grades in our blasting media range – in 25 kg bags and on pallets.
What Asilikos is made of
Asilikos is an aluminium silicate from two sources: synthetic material from boiler slag granulate and natural material from volcanic lava. The analysis runs 42 to 58 % SiO₂, 13 to 32 % Al₂O₃, 3 to 15 % Fe₂O₃, 5 to 18 % CaO and 0.5 to 4.6 % K₂O. The grain is angular, grey to black, with a Mohs hardness of at least 7 – harder than glass and hard enough for mill scale, old coatings and rust. Specific density is 2.4 to 3.0 kg/dm³, bulk density 1.05 to 1.4 kg/dm³.
Three grades in 25 kg bags
As bagged goods we stock the three most common grades. 0.2 to 0.7 mm is the fine quality for thin-walled parts, visible surfaces and anything needing a controlled roughness profile. 0.5 to 1.6 mm is the all-round grade for structural steel and what most users order when nothing argues against it. 1.0 to 2.2 mm is the coarse quality for heavy mill scale, tenacious old paint and concrete.
The same grades on pallets
Anyone working at volume in a blast room or on site turns to the palletised goods at 1,050 kg – the same three grades, 0.2 to 0.7 mm, 0.5 to 1.6 mm and 1.0 to 2.2 mm, simply in the large unit. From this quantity the price per kilogram drops noticeably and decanting from individual bags is no longer needed. Shipping is by forwarder.
Occupational safety and standards
The point on which abrasives for open blasting are decided is the silica content. According to its data sheet Asilikos contains no more than 1 % free crystalline silica and so meets the requirements of the German DGUV rule 100-500, chapter 2.24. It is produced to ISO 11126-4 and ISO 11126-11. Just as important for the coating are the salt figures: water-soluble chlorides below 0.001 % and conductivity below 250 µS/cm – the precondition for a freshly blasted part not starting to rust under the first coat of paint.
Applications and the wider EP range
Asilikos is used on steel, concrete, wood and natural stone such as granite and basalt, and also on galvanised surfaces and in the construction of wagons, tank cars and containers. As an expendable abrasive it is blasted once rather than run in a circuit – which makes it economical in blast rooms without recovery and in open-air blasting, where recyclable media presuppose a reclaim system. EP Power Grit also offers further expendable abrasives: Afesikos (iron-free), Asilit, Vasilgrit, Scorex, NAstra, Abragrit, Fajalit, OK-Grit and garnet. These are not listed with us, but we source them on request.
