Valve accessories
Valve accessories are everything that makes a process valve ready for service: the connection to the pipework, mounting the actuator, reporting the position and limiting the stroke. Without these parts a valve is a body with an actuator on top – functional, but neither installed nor monitored. Connection to the pipework
On plastic valves the connection is part of the pressure-bearing line and is configured with the valve, not improvised afterwards. Union ends with a nut and insert are the compact solution for small and medium nominal sizes; backing flanges with a stub end come into their own where the plant is flanged anyway or a valve has to be removable without dismantling the adjacent pipe. Material, nominal size, connection form and sealing material have to suit the valve and the medium – see the butterfly valves and diaphragm valves in the range.
Getting the actuator onto the valve
Actuator and valve rarely share a mounting pattern. Mounting kits and brackets translate between the flanges to DIN EN ISO 5211, mounting sleeves compensate for differing square dimensions on shaft and hub, and shaft extensions move the operating point to where it is reachable and dry – for instance where the valve sits in a pit that can flood. For linear actuators on globe valves the NAMUR mounting bracket plays the same role: it provides the standardised interface on which positioners and feedback units are built.
Reading the position, limiting the stroke
Two different jobs that are often confused. An optical position indicator shows locally and without auxiliary power whether the valve is open or closed – meant for the walk-round and for fault-finding. A stroke limiter, by contrast, mechanically sets a fixed maximum flow so that a pump does not run into cavitation or a dosing flow stays reproducible. Both are available separately and combined; the combined versions carry the indicator in the same transparent cap.
Signal to the control system
If the position is to be not merely visible but evaluable, the route is via feedback units and positioners. A travel sensor – usually a linear potentiometer matched to the valve stroke – supplies the position to the positioner; M12 connectors in 3 to 8 pin versions, straight or angled, pre-assembled or field-wireable, carry the signal to the control system. Pin count and coding have to match the mating part, otherwise the plug will not engage.
Selection and advice
Accessories are chosen to suit the valve, not the other way round. If you are unsure which flange size, square dimension or stroke your valve has: send us the part number of the valve and, where applicable, of the actuator. We will determine the matching part from that. For wear and spare parts – transparent caps, seals, mounting kits – the number of the existing component is usually enough.
