SICK is a German sensor manufacturer headquartered in Waldkirch im Breisgau. Its sensors detect presence, position, distance, colour and contrast and thus provide the data every automated production and logistics system runs on. We list more than 5,300 SICK items – from the single cylinder switch variant to light curtains several metres high.
Detecting and measuring: the two main branches
The SICK sensor programme splits into two areas. Detection sensors answer the question "is something there, and what is it?" – around 4,600 items from the light barrier to the luminescence scanner. Distance sensors answer "how far away is it?" and work with laser or ultrasound depending on range and material.
Inductive proximity sensors
With more than 1,000 items the largest single block: inductive proximity sensors detect metal objects without contact and without moving parts. What matters for the choice is housing style, switching distance and whether the sensor is mounted flush or non-flush – the latter often doubles the switching distance at the same size.
Light barriers, photoelectric sensors and light curtains
On the optical side we stock a good 600 photoelectric sensors and light barriers – through-beam, retro-reflective or diffuse, depending on whether emitter and receiver can be mounted separately. Alongside them some 990 automation light curtains for area detection, counting and measuring. These are explicitly automation components, not safety devices – personal protection calls for different series and standards.
Magnetic and cylinder sensors
Around 860 magnetic sensors detect magnetic fields even through non-magnetic walls. The most common case are the nearly 400 cylinder sensors that sit in the slot of a pneumatic cylinder and report the piston end position. When replacing one, the slot profile of the existing cylinder is what decides.

Within one series SICK differentiates by housing style, switching distance, connection type, output function and interface – which is why a handful of product families carry several thousand part numbers.
