Siemens is one of the oldest electrical engineering companies in the world – founded in Berlin in 1847 by Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske and headquartered today in Berlin and Munich. For industry, Siemens groups its control products under the SIRIUS name, a modular system that also includes the 3SE5 series of mechanical position and safety switches. Position switches in metal enclosures
The position switches in the 40 mm metal enclosure to EN 50041 are the rugged standard design for machine and plant engineering. They are joined by the 56 mm wide enclosure with three cable entries, the XL version with two contact blocks and the narrow 31 mm design to EN 50047. Many types are available as basic switches without actuator head, with increased corrosion protection, with LED status display or with an M12 connector. When replacing a switch, the standard, the contact configuration, the contact type – snap-action or slow-action – and the cable entry all matter.
Position switches in plastic enclosures
Light and corrosion-resistant, the position switches in the 31 mm plastic enclosure to EN 50047 are the most popular design in the series, complemented by 40 mm enclosures to EN 50041 and the 50 mm wide version with two cable entries. For tight installation spaces there is the compact design with a permanently connected cable or M12 device connector, and for control cabinets there are open auxiliary switches. Because switching points and mounting dimensions are standardised, a switch to the same standard can usually be replaced without drilling new holes.
Safety switches with separate actuator and tumbler
Protective doors are monitored by safety switches with separate actuator, which only switch with the matching coded actuator and are therefore protected against simple bypassing. The safety switches with tumbler also keep a protective door closed – with 1,300 N in the plastic or 2,600 N in the metal enclosure – for as long as the machine is still running down. The versions differ in the locking principle, spring-force or solenoid-force locking, in the solenoid voltage and in the type of auxiliary, emergency or escape release.
Hinge switches and versions down to -40 °C
The safety hinge switches monitor hinged doors and flaps directly at the pivot axis and switch off at an opening angle of just 10 degrees. For wind turbines, the food industry and railway applications, Siemens offers position switches for ambient temperatures down to -40 °C with increased corrosion protection, shock and vibration tested to DIN EN 61373. When reordering, check the article number: the low-temperature versions usually end in -1AJ0 and should not be swapped for the standard version.
Accessories and spare parts
Because the 3SE5 series has a modular design, actuator heads, twist levers, rollers, contact blocks, covers and empty enclosures can be replaced individually. The accessories and spare parts range therefore often saves you the complete switch: a worn roller lever or a damaged cover is replaced within minutes.
